This is the first zombie book that I've read that I simply could not put down. It's not all action, though there is a lot. But the thoughts, actions and reactions all come through with simple clarity.
It's one damn fine book. Oct 03, Chris Birrell rated it it was amazing. Adrenaline-fueled zombie classic! Simply couldn't put it down. Great, memorable and not in the slightest bit cliched characters or storyline make for a stomping good read.
And some original new zombie aspects add some originality into my favourite genre! Read it today!
Jun 02, Colleen Goff rated it it was amazing. Awesome I read his other series and he is such a good writer I needed more!
I am not usually a fan of zombie stuff but this so well written. The characters are wonderful can't wait to read the rest of the series and anything else by this author.
Mar 04, Freedom rated it it was amazing. This is the first time I have read a book. Im glad I didnt pay for this. The book was easy to read and there were entertaining parts, however there was a lot of repetition and pointless plot lines.
It was just one ridiculous gory massacre after another. One very disturbing scene that I found uncomfortable to read and unnecessary was when a group of straight characters held a man captive and pretended they were going to rape him as punishment.
The characters found it all very hilarious and ran away with the man in tears traumatised. Rape is not a joke! It left me utterly flabbergasted.
Mean while the two protagonists of the book are out there slicing and dicing zombies in to oblivion and described as coming out of battles drenched in zombie blood from head to toe, faces covered!
Yet no sign of infection for them or any other character. There was also a few elements that strayed away from the classic zombie genre.
It was far too intelligent and made the genre too far fetched. Another ridiculous thing is the fact the main character Howie is meant to be just a run of the mill average joe supermarket manager that has some how transformed in to the ultimate killing machine!
He manages to turn in to a highly skilled, super fit assassin in an instant, with the ability to lead and navigate an army of people, not to mention strategize a full blown war.
I mean talk about transferable skills! Aug 30, Mike Emeny rated it it was ok. Lets be honest, if you're considering this book and you're a fan of zombies then you are not likely expecting 'high' fiction.
I went into this on the back of the countless reviews here and on Amazon that raved about this series. Things started off quite well. I wasn't keen on the use of present tense, and I never did like it as the story progressed.
Though it started off being quite intense, and suited the story well, eventually it felt gimmicky and it just didn't sit well with me.
In terms of Lets be honest, if you're considering this book and you're a fan of zombies then you are not likely expecting 'high' fiction.
In terms of plot - again, things started well enough. Lots of action, a general sense of terror and confusion as the outbreak explodes out of control.
The first few days were fairly entertaining - and then it began to drag Like the zombies that take front of centre for most of the book, the plot reaches a peak and suddenly tumbles into tedium.
Only, not a lot happens in that day at all!! No spoilers - but I was left utterly cheated and deflated by the end of the story. Looking ahead at the next 7 days and I note that the book is over pages long!!
You'd be better served reading the Wheel of time Series. Honestly, if I have to read how Howie is 'good' and the zombies he kills are 'evil' one more time I might just implode.
On too many occasions the plot is halted whilst the reader is taken on Howie's diatribe against the Undead.
The plot concept and characters fell away for me and became more and more unbelievable. Of course, we're expected to suspend reality to some degree, but where this book goes it just got silly.
At first I thought it was a little 'videogamey' and I was content to put up with that and carry on. But, as the virus evolved and the story took its twists and turns, I was hurled well and truly off the roller-coaster and hit the ground hard.
I persisted and finished the book, just so that I could sit here and share my opinion! I don't know what all the fuss is about. If you want grit and plot, read the Walking Dead graphic novels - watch the TV series, and avoid this!
Oct 23, Sally Sadler rated it it was amazing. Never ever thought I'd enjoy undead style books. Basically I loved the extracted series and wasn't sure about the undead stuff but my daughter got me into the tv series and I thought it was ok but lacking in many areas.
But it made me think, I enjoyed Haywoods extracted stuff and the emotional mix so why not try the undead stuff.
Oh wow it doesn't disappoint. I love the speed, the interactions the horror and gore and to put it mildly I litterally imagine who would play what person if it was a Never ever thought I'd enjoy undead style books.

Haywood once again spins a tale of Howie, a night shift supermarket worker as he fights off the undead and meets some fantastic people along the way.
He first meets up with awesome people along the way. First, he teams up with Dave, a co-worker at the grocery store.
Dave is a professional killing machine, devoid and methodical of social grace. The two characters are joined by rookie soldiers Blowers, Cookey, and Nick and the comedy continue as the group dish out witty barbs.
Each of Haywood character is well crafted and wholly believable. It is evident in the writing that there was much input in creating these characters and the dynamic they add to the group.
Along the way, more characters are introduced, and despite the never-ending battles for survival, Howie and his friends continue in the mission of finding a haven for refugees.
